THE ADVANTAGES OF ROBOTIC SURGERY FOR KIDNEY CANCER

THE ADVANTAGES OF ROBOTIC SURGERY FOR KIDNEY CANCER

Robotic surgery is an advanced approach to surgery that allows doctors to perform surgery with maximum precision. In robotic surgery for kidney cancer, multiple keyhole-sized incisions are done by the doctor. Unlike traditional surgery methods which are highly painful and necessitate partial rib removal. Robotic surgery as compared with the traditional surgery method does not make use of one big incision measuring several inches across the side of the abdomen. With a camera attached to the robotic arm, the surgeon gets a magnified view of the affected area. With that enhanced view, the doctor temporarily cuts off the blood supply to the severely affected kidney before cutting away the malignant region. The surgeon may work with great precision and control when removing the kidney tumor because of the magnified view of the targeted area which enables appropriate positioning of the surgical equipment.
Following are the two major advantages of a reconstructed kidney after partial nephrectomy-
1.    Kidney reconstruction may reduce the likelihood of long-term kidney failure.
2.    The reconstructed kidney serves as a safety net if the other kidney gets damaged.

In nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy, the tumor is properly removed through one of the keyhole incisions. It also includes the dissection of the nearby lymph nodes. In traditional methods, the surgeons had to remove the entire kidney using a procedure known as radical nephrectomy. Robotic surgery for kidney cancer has fewer risks. It keeps you protected from adverse effects such as pain, prolonged recovery time, several stitches, and intense pain.
Radical nephrectomy or total nephrectomy is performed in the cases where the situation of the kidney is very complex and it no longer functions. The entire robot-assisted procedure is carried out via tiny keyhole incisions. In total nephrectomy, the abdomen is first inflated with carbon dioxide to create enough space to move the colon away from the kidney. Following that, the surgeon cuts off the blood flow to the kidney so that it can be removed from the bowels, spleen, liver, back muscle,s or/and the pancreas.

ADVANTAGES OF ROBOTIC SURGERY FOR KIDNEY CANCER ARE-

It has various worthy advantages over traditional surgery methods. Robotic surgery for kidney cancer includes:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less scarring
  • Reduced pain
  • Fast recovery rate
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Chances of saving major parts of the patient’s kidney.
  • Reduced risk of leaving behind any part of the tumor.
  • Large kidney tumors on the inner and outer sides of the kidney can be removed readily with robotic surgery.
