How long does it take to recover from gallbladder stone surgery?

Gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ located under the kidney that helps in storing & releasing bile juice, bile is a liquid comprising cholesterol, bilirubin & bile salts. It is produced by the liver and aids in the digestion of fats present in the food one consumes.

Gallstones are hard deposits that are formed and found in the gallbladder.

These are of 2 types:

-Cholesterol Stones:

These are the most common types of stones, more than 80% of people face these kinds of stones. These are yellowish in color. These are formed if bile contains too much cholesterol & bilirubin, and low bile salts. It leads to pain in the upper right abdomen, and excess weight loss is one of its causes.

-Pigment Stones:

Pigment salts are brown-black stones formed by phosphorus, calcium, bilirubin, and carbonate. These stones are linked to liver & blood diseases and are caused due to high levels of bilirubin.

-Robotic/Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Surgery:

Robotic / Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy surgeries are minimally invasive surgeries. In such a kind of surgery, the doctor gives anesthesia to the patient and makes him sleep. Then, three to four small incisions are done with the instrument to access the gallbladder. With the help of the camera, the doctor will attain visibility of the inner body and remove the gallbladder. After, removal he’ll seal the opening with stitches or staples.

Benefits:- Smaller incisions

  • Less blood loss
  • Quick recovery
  • Less hospital stay

-Open Cholecystectomy Surgery:

Open Cholecystectomy is a traditional way of removing gallbladder and gallstones. In today’s time, it is not much seen as large incisions and huge blood loss is there due to which recovery time is more. It is done in cases of symptomatic gallstones

Recovery Time:

A patient's recovery time depends on the severity and kind of treatment given. In the case of laparoscopic or robotic surgery the person may discharge within 24 hours of the surgery and can return to normal functioning within a week.

In the case, of open cholecystectomy patient requires to stay under the doctor’s close examination for at least a week and needs complete bed rest for a minimum of one month.

It is recommended to have light and small portions of meals after the surgery, consumption of only low-fat food is to be done. One needs to immediately consult a doctor if they experience jaundice, loose stitches, fever, swelling, blood & pus in stitches, breathing issues, or vomiting.
